Why would someone propose to their girlfriend at a friend's trip? Don't they see how that can be extremely uncomfortable for everyone else?
Proposals are a whole deal on their own. Some people like to do them in public, in places like a restaurant, a concert, or even Disneyland; it's a way to show the world how much they love each other. I understand that it could be a preference. But every time I see a proposal like that, I always think, "What if the other person says no?" And I think that my question has been answered in this story, and let me just tell you, it is not a good outcome. If you do a public display of affection like a very public proposal, you have to be extremely sure about the answer the other person is going to give, but unfortunately you are never fully sure about it.
This may be a little too far-fetched, but another thing that I think when I see these public proposals is the fact that they seem to be a kind of tactic for the person asking to force the person being asked to say yes. Because they are in front of a lot of people, or sometimes just family members and friends, they just have to say yes. They can't let the other person down in front of everyone, so they say yes even if they don't want to. Maybe the person proposing this way wasn't doing it with this intention, but to me it will always look like that. It doesn't feel like a genuine question, but more of a forced situation where the only two ways out are saying yes or running away to avoid having to deal with the embarrassment and judgement you will receive after rejecting the proposal.
So maybe your intentions are good. You are having a great time at a public place, or you want everyone you know to be there with you while you celebrate your engagement. But if the other person says no, rejects the proposal, then what do you do? In this case the girlfriend said she had already told him that she wasn't ready for marriage, that's why I don't think that doing the proposal at the friend's trip was something with good intentions. It feels as if he planned it just so she would feel forced to say yes. If that was the case, I'm glad that this woman didn't back down and stood on what she thought. She said the same thing she would have said if the question was asked at any other place. And that is something she will not regret. What caused the conflict and made everything uncomfortable for all the other friends who were there wasn't the fact that this girl said no. It's all the man's fault for asking at that time, making everything worse than it would have been if it was done in the privacy of their own house. So why? I will say that this seems like a tactic to get her to say yes, but you are free to defer.
